The human spirit—our spirit—is connected to His Spirit, and as stated in Romans 6–8, our inner being desires the law of God. God writes His law in our minds and puts it in our hearts, and therefore there is an inner desire to follow His instructions.
As believers in Christ, the Holy Spirit influences and enables us to follow God’s way. That is why Paul tells us to live in the Spirit so as not to fulfil the lust of the flesh.
James 4:5
Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
Our spirit, also called the breath of God in us (27:3), comes from God and is essentially the connection to God.
When we are born again, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us, connects with our spirit. We are no longer dead but alive. God has given us this breath, and it will return to Him.
Jesus said, “Father, into Your hand I lay my spirit.” —Luke 23:46.
There are numerous verses in the Bible referring to “the code” that God our Father put in us. The human spirit is the lamp of the LORD that sheds light on one’s inmost being.
Proverbs 20:27
Thy word is the lamp unto my feet and the light unto my path.
Body, soul, and spirit—in the Bible the body is often referred to as a curtain, tent or a veil, the human spirit as God’s lamp, the Holy Spirit as oil, Jesus as the light of the world. So we are God’s lamps—we need light and oil in order to burn and be the light as we are called to be.
Lamp (the human spirit) + Oil (the Holy Spirit) + Light to light us up (Jesus is the light of the world) = Light (and salt) of the world
Jesus is the Word that became flesh, the Word which was broken. Knowing and understanding God’s Word—which is the lamp unto our feet and the light unto our path—gives us guidance.
The spirit man craves light and truth. We see this as Pontius Pilate, a man of high status, asks Jesus, “What is the truth?”
Jesus is the truth. He is the light of the world and is the only hope we have for us to live life in its fulness. Jesus is the truth. We long for Him, dear friends.
Amen
