Sons and Fathers – In Search of Adam
John 1:9–13
“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”
Our Lord Jesus came to reconcile us back to our Father, and what a joy it is to be in His presence. Reconciliation with others begins with reconciliation with God. For children to be reconciled to their earthly fathers, they must first turn to their Heavenly Father.
Malachi 4:5–6 (NIV)
“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”
During the Roman occupation the people had forgotten who they were. They needed God. They needed Jesus. He is the only way to the Father. Hope rises as the children come to the Father.
The Man Jesus
Jacob wrestled with God, and he said that he had seen the Lord—Peniel (El-Peniel)—face to face at Bethel (Genesis 32:30).
Jacob described Christ as an angel, but an angel does not bless or give someone a new name. Jacob saw Christ.
Connecting the Dots
Judges 13:11, 18, 22
“And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, ‘Are you the man who spoke to this woman?’ And he said, ‘I am.’ And the angel of the LORD said to him, ‘Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?’ And Manoah said to his wife, ‘We shall surely die, for we have seen God.’”
Galatians 5:13–16
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.”
For the Law is written in our minds and placed in our hearts by God. Then, by His Spirit, He leads us in paths of righteousness
(Psalm 23).
Faith, hope, and love abide—but of all these, love is the greatest.
The heart behind the Law is love.
Song of Solomon 2:4
“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.”
